If you find incorrect recipient details in a Remitly transfer, contact the provider promptly and identify the specific transaction. Before sending, correct the information in the transfer you are preparing. After submission, do not assume that editing a saved recipient changes a payment already in progress.
Remitly’s US agreement generally restricts changes after submission and places responsibility on the sender to provide accurate receiving information, subject to applicable law. Ask what can be done for the actual transfer rather than relying on a universal “edit” procedure. Remitly’s US agreement.

Identify the error precisely
“The details are wrong” leaves too much unresolved. Determine which field differs from the intended instruction.
A name mismatch, wrong institution, incorrect account identifier, wrong wallet number, and unintended recipient are different problems. The remedy may depend on both the field and the stage reached by the payment.
Record the intended information using a source the recipient trusts. Do not repeatedly replace one uncertain number with another while trying to make the transfer work.
Before you confirm payment
If the transaction has not been submitted, stop and review the complete instruction. Correct the relevant field, then recheck the recipient amount, currency, delivery method, and total charge.
Changing the receiving arrangement can affect other parts of the quote. Review the final screen as a whole rather than assuming only one field changed.
Ask the recipient to confirm information that you cannot independently establish. Avoid guessing a bank branch or wallet provider from a similar name.
After submission, distinguish the record from the transaction
There are two separate questions:
- What receiving details are saved for future use?
- What receiving details were attached to the submitted transfer?
Ask the provider to confirm the second question explicitly. A corrected address book entry is not evidence that a previously submitted instruction has been amended.
Use the transfer reference in the inquiry and ask whether the provider can correct, stop, or otherwise resolve that particular payment. If an account-specific editing option appears, read the confirmation carefully and verify which transaction it affects.
If cancellation is the available route
A provider may need to establish whether the payment can still be stopped. Until you have a clear response, avoid treating a requested cancellation as completed.
Ask what to do next and whether a replacement transfer should wait. Keep the response and any case reference. The cancellation and refunds guide explains how to distinguish stopping a payment from receiving the money back.
If you decide to send again before the original is resolved, recognize the possibility of two completed payments. The pressure of an urgent deadline does not remove that financial exposure.
If money reached an unintended destination
Report the problem immediately and accurately. State that the details you entered did not match the intended recipient and ask whether recovery is possible.
A wrong account identifier does not automatically establish a right to reimbursement. Federal remittance rules have specific provisions and conditions concerning incorrect account numbers and recipient-institution identifiers. A provider’s responsibilities depend on the facts. CFPB error-resolution rules, §1005.33.
Do not contact an unknown person through an unverified intermediary offering to recover the payment for a fee. Keep the inquiry with the provider and relevant financial institution through their established channels.
Verify unexpected changes before another payment
If the error began with a message supplying new receiving details, revisit the source of that message. Contact the intended recipient through a familiar number or another independently established channel.
Ask whether they requested the change and confirm the replacement information. Do not use only the contact details contained in the message you are trying to verify.
The suspicious-message guide explains how to separate a genuine update from a possible impersonation attempt.
Make a final comparison from source to instruction
Before a replacement transfer, compare the confirmed source information against the new instruction field by field. Review identifiers in groups of digits and check the selected institution and currency separately.
Keep any support instruction associated with the original error. If the provider tells you to follow a particular correction process, use that process rather than combining it with steps from an unrelated tutorial.
The goal is to establish that the next instruction is correct and that you understand what remains unresolved about the first one.
